Why x to the power zero is one x^0=1?

For example:

2^3 * 2^0 = 2^(3+0) = 2^3
meaning, 8 * 1 = 8
Therefore, 2^0 = 1

It seems that 1^0 = 2^0 = 3^0 =4^0 =5^0 = 1

Why?

I do not buy 'mathematicians defined it that way' because 'Mathematical consistency' seems to be too mechanical. Open thinking would like to see the knowledge behind these mechanical calculations.
