Samatha Vipassana

What are the goals of Samatha and Vidarshana(vipassana) meditation in Buddhism?

Everyone discuss the methods (how to do it) of Samatha meditation and Vidarshana (vipassana) meditation.

What are the main goals of these two types of meditation that contribute to the main goal of Buddhism, which is nibbāna?
@Sati, How does 'stillness' and 'insight' contribute to nibbāna?

@S.I. Mitchell,
Liberation is a privilege within the system. Freedom is a right, outside the system.
Nibbana in Buddhism is freedom, not liberation.
Therefore, S. N. Goenka is discussing something like Buddhism, but not Buddhism.
